*

hyunseung is the very epitome of ‘discouraged’. he’s the new kid with the new smile and the new presence and the new face. his entirety is discouraged, from his face to the way he wears his shoes – stripped of laces. he’s discouraged because he worms his way into teachers’ hearts by acting like the perfect son to their parental instincts. they beam at him when he gets top marks, they beam at him when he walks in, they beam at him even when they’re trying to reprimand him.

so even though hyunseung is everything that should be discouraged, he is anything but discouraged by the teachers. junhyung has a love-hate relationship with that fact.

he hates it because ever since hyunseung has crept into his life, he’s been getting into more and more trouble. hyunseung gets away scot-free and junhyung ends up with the strikes in his permanent record and the detentions.

junhyung isn’t one to use swear words, refrains from speaking them and keeps them in his head well. but hyunseung swears like a sailor, mouth full of foul words, even soap won’t help. and over time, junhyung just kind of lets expletives slip too. fucking hyunseung and his fucking influential mouth. see? ‘lets it slip’.

so when junhyung says, “shit.” when he makes a mistake with his presentation in the lecture theatre, he bites his tongue and follows up with an unintentional “fuck.”

junhyung can see hyunseung laughing at him as the teacher lashes out at him and gives him two strikes plus two hours of detention.

            swearing is discouraged.

            *

hyunseung is discouraged because the way he eats is discouraged. his stomach is probably bottomless and he can be classified as a carnivore if he isn’t such a bunny for vegetables. he likes to eat everything and watching hyunseung gobble shit after shit should be disgusting but junhyung watches him anyway.

eating in the canteen is fine. eating in the classroom is discouraged.

but being the perfect example of secret delinquent, hyunseung shoves snacks into his backpack and sneaks them into class. he passes his box of pocky biscuits around and when it reaches junhyung, who sits at the front of the class while hyunseung sits at the third row next to the window, junhyung turns around and shakes his head slightly at hyunseung. hyunseung holds his pocky stick up and smiles a little and nods at junhyung as if saying ‘cheers’.

junhyung passes the box to the next person without taking a stick.

the box reaches junhyung a second time twenty minutes later just as he is at the point of solving a math problem. there’s only one stick left. he turns in his seat and holds the box up to hyunseung. hyunseung grins and holds his own stick up.

junhyung smiles at him a little and takes the last stick, thinking he should reward himself for solving the math problem.

he never gets to finish his answer because the teacher claps a hand on his shoulder and he only has time to shove the biscuit into his mouth. the teacher scolds junhyung in front of the entire class, who gives him apologetic looks. only hyunseung looks mirthful as he tries not to laugh.

            *

hyunseung is discouraged because sneaking around after lessons is discouraged. sneaking around in general is discouraged.

hyunseung’s favourite movie is Up and proclaims “adventure is out there” after class. that’s his way of saying, “junhyung-ah, i found a cool new secret hideout, it won’t be a secret once i show you where it is.” and even though junhyung wants to go back to his dorm room and crash and moan about his piling number of strikes while hyunseung has none, he lets himself be dragged.

hyunseung’s secret hideout is hardly a secret place. it’s just the old dance studio that nobody uses anymore because the floorboards are squeaky and slippery and the mirrors are stained and the fluorescent lights flicker like Christmas lights. the old dance studio is also tucked away in a quiet corner near the school library on the campus, it’s rather far from everything else and that’s why the school built a new one beside the classrooms.

hyunseung flicks the lights on. they flicker immediately. there are no windows so the room is dark besides the flickering lights. hyunseung looks creepy and junhyung points it out. hyunseung says junhyung’s face even in daylight is ten times creepier anyway. junhyung sits with his back to the mirror wall. hyunseung takes his shoes off and slides his socked feet along the slippery floor. the floorboards squeak and crackle. he does a little spin and junhyung watches.

when you’re in a dance studio, you dance, and junhyung expects that’s what hyunseung wants. but hyunseung doesn’t dance. he tells junhyung to take his shoes off. junhyung raises his eyebrows in question but takes his shoes off anyway. hyunseung squats on the floor and holds his arms out.

“drag me across the floor please.”

junhyung gives him a long flat look. hyunseung blinks at him and waits. he finally sighs and complies, dragging hyunseung along the floor slowly at first and then he starts running in circles and hyunseung eventually ends up on his stomach as he’s pulled around.

they’re laughing too loudly and the floorboards squeak and crackle under junhyung’s running feet. but hyunseung’s hands are warm and tight in his hands and hyunseung’s laughter is lovely and bubbling in his ears. they take turns to drag each other around the studio. having this much fun is probably discouraged too.

and when they’re tired, junhyung collapses on his back and hyunseung rests his head on junhyung’s stomach. they’re sweaty and panting. and when hyunseung looks up at junhyung, he’s beautiful under the flickering lights.

junhyung has considered giving up on his friendship with this boy because honestly, he’s a horrible influence. but half of junhyung wants to keep hyunseung’s secret delinquency a secret. as junhyung watches hyunseung’s eyes slip close, the lights cast shadows on his face and then snatch them away like they hate the very idea of hiding hyunseung’s face, junhyung thinks this is it.

when hyunseung is called over by the student leader yoon doojoon, who’s sitting with another student leader, yang yoseob, junhyung thinks hyunseung is finally getting caught for something. junhyung doesn’t know what hyunseung did but who cares? he’s finally getting a strike, that’s awesome to junhyung.

but when he returns to junhyung’s table, he’s unfazed and continues with his homework.

“what did he want?” junhyung asks.

“hm? nothing.” hyunseung shrugs. “he told me dating is against school rules.”

junhyung frowns. “but you’re not dating anyone.”

“he thinks you and i are dating i think.”

junhyung has been hanging out with hyunseung a lot. junhyung is the first friend hyunseung made so it’s natural for hyunseung to spend a lot of time with junhyung but it’s not like the former doesn’t have any other friends. junhyung doesn’t feel like he’s getting any special treatment from hyunseung that warrants him as a boyfriend. but he feels a little pleased that someone actually thinks they look and behave like a couple.

“well, he and that yang yoseob look like they’re dating.” junhyung mutters, glancing darkly at the pair across the classroom.

doojoon is speaking to another student and yoseob is discreetly copying answers from doojoon’s exercise book. when doojoon turns back, he catches yoseob. yoseob grins at him. doojoon sighs and pushes his book closer to yoseob.

“that’s what i told them.” hyunseung agrees.

junhyung chuckles. “did it shut him up?”

            “yup. they denied it though.”

“dating is extremely discouraged after all.”

hyunseung puts his pen down and stares at junhyung. junhyung’s used to hyunseung’s staring. it only means hyunseung is trying to analyze something. teachers love him when he puts on this face. hyunseung uses that to his advantage. sometimes he puts on that face to avoid getting called out by the teacher because they think he’s thinking very hard. that’s a secret he told junhyung.

“why do you use the word ‘discouraged’ so much? why can’t you just say it’s against the rules?”

junhyung shrugs. “because by saying it’s discouraged, it doesn’t mean we can’t do it. it just means we shouldn’t.” he stares back confidently.

hyunseung is incredibly discouraged, even more discouraged than dating or eating snacks in class or cussing. but only junhyung thinks that way. he knows liking hyunseung this much is wrong. but he also knows liking hyunseung this much makes him happy. and he wants to do the discouraged. and if they get caught, he’ll take the blame.

hyunseung grins at junhyung and says, “junhyung-ah, you’re a fucking idiot.” and leans in to kiss him.

hyunseung takes the blame this time.
